RuneQuest was first published in 1978 by Chaosium. It had a novel percentage and skill-based game mechanic, which evolved into their Basic Role-Playing system, and was based in the fantasy world of Glorantha. With the Third Edition in 1984, production and marketing was carried out by Avalon Hill under licence, and the core rules were split out from the Glorantha setting. The relationship was an unhappy one, and all rights reverted to Chaosium.
More recently, a 4th Edition of the game was released by Mongoose Publishing in 2006, now known as RuneQuest I. In 2010, they brought out a new version, RuneQuest II, but a year later it was announced that this latest ruleset was to be renamed 'Legend' and would continue as a separate game entirely. Later in 2011, the Legend RPG was indeed released, followed by a slew of supplements.
In 2012, RuneQuest 6e was published by The Design Mechanism.
