Chainmail: Rules for Medieval Miniatures is a wargame that introduced rules for combat between individual figures, and fantasy elements including spells and monsters. While not a roleplaying game, the original Dungeons & Dragons was dervived from the ruleset, and the first recognizable roleplaying campaign (Dave Arneson's Blackmoor), was run using a modified version.
The first incarnation, only 2 pages long, was written by Jeff Perrin. Gary Gygax expanded the rules to 16 pages, and they were published for the first time in 1969 as "LGTSA Medieval Military Miniatures Rules" in the IFW monthly newsletter. Gygax later added sections on man-to-man combat and the seminal "Fantasy Supplement", and this first edition was published by Guidon Games in 1971.
