The Dark Sun setting was released in 1991 by TSR for the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition ruleset. Set in a world devastated by careless application of magic characters have to survive against the elements while contending against ecological disaster, resource depletion, slavery and poverty, and the widespread use of psionic abilities. Publication ceased in 1996.

When Dungeons & Dragons 3e came out in 2000, Dark Sun did not become an official setting, although numerous fans converted material and continued to play games set in the exotic, arid world of Athas.

In August 2010, Wizards of the Coast launched a Dungeons & Dragons 4e version of the setting.
