Refined over 30 years of play, Basic Role Playing (BRP) is the core rule mechanic used by Chaosium. The rules material has been extracted from the various setting-specific books of systems such as RuneQuest and Call of Cthulhu and refined to provide a straightforward introduction to roleplaying in general, or as a core system whatever it is you want to play. Several other publishers have availed themselves of the opportunity to use this versatile mechanic.

In BRP, a character's vital statistics and skills are measured as a percentage, against which he rolls as appropriate. Characters do not have 'levels' but develop each skill individually.
