The Second Edition of Twilight: 2000 was published in 1990, again by Game Designers Workshop. By then the world had changed quite a bit politically since 1984, and the new version recognised that this was 'alternate history' rather than a possible future... while version 2.2 came out in 1993, and had renegade elements in Russia re-establishing a Communist government!

This period of the game also saw Merc: 2000 which provided an alternative setting in which characters played mercenaries working for or against government forces in a world in which the wars of Twilight: 2000 did not occur.
