D20 Modern: The Counter-Terrorism Assaulter

The Counter-Terrorism Assaulter

This chap, a prestige class, is the core of any SWAT or hostage-rescue team - the fellow who charges in and deals with the bad guys while protecting the innocent. Extremely fit and expert in small arms and explosives, you'd be happier if he's on your side than arrayed against you!

The talent trees available are Assault and Firearms Training, but the CT Assaulter is also able to select options from a Sniper talent tree - this is viewed as cross-training as a conventional hostage-rescue team or similar will be composed of Assaulters and Snipers, most operators specialising in one or the other area.

The Assault talent tree provides useful skills like CQD (Close Quarters Drill) which, in game terms, means that you are so used to fighting in a small space that you don't provoke attacks of opportunity when making a ranged attack. Other talents involve room clearance and setting effective breaching charges. In real life, these skills are acquired by extensive realistic and repetitive drills often conducted with live ammunition, honed by practise on a mock-up of the place you intend to assault if you have the luxury of advance warning (e.g. a siege which the team has been tasked to be ready to break, but in which negotiations are still going on).

Finally, two sample Assaulters are provided, one military and one a police SWAT team member.

This product shows a good understanding of the underlying skills necessary to be an Assaulter, and anyone wanting to run a Rainbow Six type game will certainly need a few of these around.
