Dungeons & Dragons: Gormoth the Ever-Hungry

Rooms & Encounters: Gormoth the Ever-Hungry

Get ready to hold your nose! Which can of course make it a bit difficult to wave your sword or get the verbal component of your spell precisely right...

The latest room in The Dungeon Under the Mountain is a coprophobe's nightmare. Even as you approach, you can smell rotting dung and it only gets worse as you get closer. A bunch of kobolds, whom the party really ought to have encountered on their way here, worship or at least attempt to placate the many-headed, every-hungry and decidedly not house-broken resident of this chamber. If they don't find it enough food, they feature on the menu, quite an incentive. Should the party befriend them, they'll ask for help in destroying their hungry deity, otherwise they probably think adventurers taste better than kobold and try to serve them up.

Following the familiar pattern, this encounter includes enough backstory to fit it in smoothly, along with scalable stat-blocks for our many-headed friend, the kobolds (including a few personalities), traps and relevant skill checks. You can set the entire thing to be a high, middle or low challenge, or tailor things by choosing which bits are to be harder or easier...

The map, too, can be altered; and is provided as a single-sheet for DM reference and a larger version for use as a battlemap. Oh, and they had to come up with a new symbol for a dung-pile!

A neat little encounter with enough going on to make it more than a mere monster-bash... but if bashing monsters is what you enjoy this one has a good and challenging combat.
